Mobile-Portable Hybrid Apple Tree Dental

c. What are some staffing considerations?

The Apple Tree Mobile Dental Team varies from site to site and is based on the mix of oral health services to be provided at each site daily. The ability to schedule single or multiple mobile offices at each site greatly affords flexibility in scheduling. A one-office set up may include one dentist or one hygienist and one dental assistant. A two-office set up may include one dentist, one hygienist and one assistant or one dentist and two assistants operating two chairs. There are many schemes for staffing, including use of as many as all six mobile offices at one location at one time. The scheduling patterns can be very flexible and can be changed daily.

An additional position utilized by Apple Tree is the patient coordinator who serves as the liaison between the dental staff and the staff of the facility. The most important duties are coordinating the administration of any premedication for dental procedures, determining the times at which patients will be seen and helping transport patients to and from the mobile dental office location. The coordinator is also available to help the dentists, hygienists and assistants with other aspects of patient care, such as communicating with the facility staff regarding treatment performed, delivering written post-op instructions and helping with instrument sterilization when time permits.

Data entry people generally work an eight-hour shift during the day; dentists and hygienists work 8:30- 4:00 and dental assistants work 7:45-5:00 because of clean-up and transport back to the office. The MDV drivers work the afternoon shift, typically from 4 pm to midnight. Minnesota does not require special licensing to drive Apple Tree's MDV, but state regulations will vary.

In some states, including Minnesota, anyone working with vulnerable populations, e.g., nursing home residents or group home residents, must annually undergo a background check by the State regulatory agency and receive clearance to work with these populations. Apple Tree has a written contract with each of the facilities it services, and the contract states the qualifications of the providers for the facilities.

The Twin Cities program has about fifty employees. The clinical staff includes eleven dentists, five dental hygienists, fifteen dental assistants, three lab technicians, ten office staff and three MDV drivers. The Hawley staff consists of seventeen people, including five dentists, three dental hygienists, five dental assistants, an office manager, four office support providers and one MDV driver. The Madelia staff includes two dentists, two dental assistants, two dental hygienists and two office staff. To provide personnel and administrative support for its Twin Cities and Hawley programs, Apple Tree's management staff includes a chief executive officer, a dental director for each central clinic location, a director of finance, a director of information systems, two development staff, a director of project development, and a part-time human resources manager.
